World Spine Day
October 16th 2024
World Spine Day brings together individuals from various backgrounds, including health professionals, exercise and rehabilitation experts, public health advocates, schoolchildren, governments and the wider public.
The 2024 initiative urges individuals to spread awareness about the worldwide impact of spinal pain and disability. It aims to empower people of all ages, across all nations to adopt evidence-based strategies for maintaining spinal health under the slogan “Support Your Spine“.
Key Facts:
In 2020, low back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally and it is estimated that the number of cases will increase to 843 million cases by 2050, driven largely by population expansion and ageing.
LBP is the single leading cause of disability worldwide and the condition for which the greatest number of people may benefit from rehabilitation.
LBP can be experienced at any age, and most people experience LBP at least once in their life.
Prevalence increases with age up to 80 years, while the highest number of LBP cases occurs at the age of 50–55 years. LBP is more prevalent in women.
Non-specific LBP is the most common presentation of LBP (about 90% of cases).
It is imperative for people of all backgrounds to recognize the importance of staying mobile, avoiding prolonged periods of physical inactivity and refraining from overloading their spines with excessive weight or strain. Chiropractors can play a large role in preventing and managing low back pain and spine dysfunction!
Health Tip: Healthy Spine Moves
The Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA), in partnership with the 10 provincial chiropractic associations, launched the Straighten Up Canada app on October 16, 2014 to mark World Spine Day.
The app includes 12 individual exercise videos for young people and adults, a tracking feature to monitor progress and set personalized reminders and social media sharing capabilities. The Straighten Up Canada app is available in French and English, and was created to bring awareness to the importance of good posture for optimal spinal health.
To download the App, visit Android App or Apple App.
